GSU Writeup

Well, here’s this week’s writeup, we’ll see how it goes…

Well, it’s here…no need to say much here, we’re #1 in the country. If we can somehow pull off a 14-game win streak we’ll have a lovely crystal football as a parting gift. Is that too much to ask? According to national pundits if we win out we might play our way into the NFC playoffs due to our schedule strength, but a team bred in the heat of the SEC and particularly the SEC-East if nothing else should be ready for a tough schedule. It’s going to be fun, sit back and enjoy…

Uhhhh…

I present you the triple option version of the GT uniform. Does anyone have an extra lunch, I seem to have lost mine… Neither one of these guys look particularly thrilled about this…

OL depth chart and other stuff…

Steve and the guys at ugsaports.com have a great article about yesterday’s practice. Great because it has Richt saying what the starting OL would be if we played tomorrow. We don’t but it gives us some insight. Basically it sconfirms some stuff we thought and really solidifies the early impressions we’ve heard. LT will be Tripp, which is good because it means he’s nailed down the all-important blindside protection spot (he looks far more athletic than most OLs). LG is Vance (quite possible the largest guard I can remember us having at 6-8, 320). Center is Chris Davis, RT is Josh Davis (likely a placeholder until Boling returns after week 1). The surprise though was at RG where Richt confirmed that true freshman Cordy Glenn would be the starter as of now. That’s impressive. Richt indicated that Glenn would have played even if Sturdivant hadn’t gone down.

The other OL news was the fact that “Bean” is getting some looks at OT. While Bean is pretty much an ideal size to play OG, so the OT time is likely just a move to create depth and see if Bean can really impress somewhere. He’s a beast and is likely too talented to not see the field somewhere but reading between the lines it appears he’s struggling with making the right decisions and learning the system.

Blair Walsh (wonder if he’s had to put up with a lot of Trudi jokes) has apparently really impressed and certainly has the confidence you want in your kicker. He seems to have nailed down the job which is a huge relief.

Yes, there are a ton of injuries but it doesn’t appear that any are so serious that it would greatly diminish playing time. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see nearly all of the green jersey bunch playing next Saturday. Moreno specifically.

Logan Gray is Superman

Apparently the rumors about #3 QB Logan Gray’s athleticism are true.  He’s now one of 3 folks Richt named yesterday as being heavily involved in punt return.  I’m pretty sure Cory Phillips and Blake Barnes weren’t bringing this type of athleticism to the table.  Gray is also getting looked at helping out on kick coverage and several other things.  That’s impressive.

The other interesting news in that bit were the names of the other two guys that were getting hard looks at punt return: Knowshon Moreno and Carlton Thomas.  Thomas as a freshman is exciting because that’s a role I thought he was perfectly suited for so it’s good to see him contributing and living up to the billing.  Moreno is a different story.  I know you’re supposed to get your best players on the field but I remember far too vividly Tim Wansley going down at punt returner in 2001.  If we’ve got guys that are close to his effectiveness I’d prefer to see someone without his level of irreplaceability.  Yes, Reggie Bush did that on his way to a Heisman, but it still worries me a bit.  He is probably perfectly suited to the role, but I think Thomas is too.

Defensive end is a bit of a concern now as 7 of our 8 are banged up now.  All the injuries are pretty low on the severity scale but it’s still a bit of a worry, especially when 4 of the 8 are true or redshirt freshmen needing valuable experience.
